Boston has a long history of gambling. The oldest casino in America was opened right here in Boston! It was called the Tremont House. The Tremont House was built in 1848 by James Polk and was located on Tremont Street in Boston. It was open from 1849 to 1926, when it closed its doors for good after being sold to a new owner who decided to open a new hotel on its site instead.
The Tremont House was one of many casinos spread throughout Boston during that time. Two other casinos were built at this same time: The India House (opened in 1854) and The Albany House (opened in 1857). These three casinos were among New England’s most famous gambling establishments at the time! They had many entertainment options, such as music halls, dance halls, and more!

Yes, Boston has casinos. The city is home to many gambling establishments, including four casinos and one Indian casino.
The first casino in Boston was the Seminole Casino, which opened in 1973. The building was later demolished and replaced by a hotel.
The city’s second casino opened in 1976 on the site of an old theater. Two more casinos followed it in the same location in 1978 and 1980. They were all closed by 1983 due to a lack of profitability for the area’s hotels and restaurants and local opposition to the businesses.
In 1997, Massachusetts voters approved a ballot initiative allowing gambling at tables outside bars and restaurants. This measure led to the construction of three more casinos in Boston: The Foxwoods Resort Casino (opened 2000), The Mohegan Sun (opened 2004), and The Turning Stone Resort & Casino (opened 2006).
Local Casinos
Boston has a few casinos, but it’s not the place you think of when you think of gambling. The city is home to several local casinos, including the Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Harrah’s Louisiana Downs & Casino in New Orleans.
There have also been attempts to bring casinos to Boston. In 1994, then-governor William Weld proposed building a casino at Suffolk Downs racetrack on the South Shore. The proposal fell apart after opposition from locals and politicians alike.
Boston has several casinos, including the Hard Rock Cafe, owned by the same company that owns Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas and New York’s Mirage (both of which are owned by MGM). The Hard Rock was the first casino to open in Boston following the repeal of state gambling laws in 2004.
The city also has three other casinos that are not affiliated with each other or the Hard Rock:
Harrah’s Boston is a small property located on Suffolk Downs racetrack. It opened in 2011 and offers slots and table games. Harrah’s also operates two poker rooms: Harrah’s Boston and Harrah’s Chesterfield Valley.
Foxwoods Casino at Natick Mall is located in Natick, Massachusetts, and is used by Foxwoods Resorts Casino Corporation. It features blackjack, baccarat, craps, roulette, and poker games. It also offers dining options such as an Asian restaurant called Sushi Bar Bistro, which serves sushi rolls, tempura entrees, and more traditional Japanese dishes like teriyaki chicken skewers and teriyaki steak tips.
