First violinist, Christopher Vuk

Christopher Vuk

Mr. Vuk received his B.M. Suma Cum Laude on scholarship from Berklee College of Music. He is also an alumnus of the University of Northern Iowa and Longy School of Music. Described by the Boston Ballet as an “Electrifying violinist,” Christopher made is New York debut at Weil Recital, Carnegie Hall, and has performed with distinguished artists such as Gloria Estefan, Bill Cosby, and Jennifer Holliday as well as a special appearance with Sesame Street. “Vuk explore[s] different ways of sparking musical interest,” says Boston Globe, in doing so, he has played for varied audiences including Queen Rainia of Jordan, Queen Noor, Mitt Romney, and First Lady, Laura Bush. Christopher is a member of the Red Bull Artsehcro, which performed the world premiere of Raul Yanez’s “Concerto for Turntable” in Issac Stern Auditorium, Carnegie Hall. He has toured with internationally acclaimed recording artist/composer Tim Janis, and EMI recording artists Giorgia Fumanti and Ryland Angel, and is also a founding member of the International Musician’s Assembly and the Roads to You Tour in collaboration with concert pianist, Zade Dirani Christopher is the founder/music director of the Boston String Quartet, a contemporary classical ensemble. Christopher has collaborated on several albums for former Scorpions member Robin McAuley, Jamey Haddad, Dave Fiuczynski, Noel, Nelson Navaratte, Jean Hilbert, the Boston String Quartet, and his own solo album. Christopher currently records with MMC Recordings. He is the recipient of the Certificate of Congressional Commendation. Christopher is currently the Director of School of Groove.

Second violinist, Sharon Cohen

Israeli violinist Sharon Cohen has decided to make Boston a home since co-founding Boston’s self-conducted Chamber Orchestra ‘A Far Cry’. She received her Master of Music degree from the New England Conservatory in Boston, MA, after finishing her first degree at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.

Sharon’s greatest passion (besides cutting hair) is Chamber music, and she has participated in many festivals around Israel and Europe. In this past year she has performed in the Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival in Israel, and the Rolandsek Festival in Germany. She has collaborated with artists including Yo Yo Ma, Pinchas Zukerman, members of the Berlin Philharmonic and members of the Jerusalem quartet.

Alongside the Boston String Quartet, Sharon is also a member of A Far Cry, Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Harvard Baroque Chamber Orchestra. Since 2003 she is a member of the West Eastern Divan, which is an orchestra that brings together Israelis and Arabs under the Baton of Daniel Barenboim for the purpose of promoting dialogue and coexistence. The orchestra has performed all over the world in major festivals such as the Salzburg Festival in Austria and the BBC Proms in London.

Violist, Chen Lin

Chen Lin

Born in Taiwan, Chen Lin began to play viola at the age of eleven. She attended Taipei Municipal University of Education, Taiwan, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music and Education, with the honor of Second Prize of the Music Department. In 2007, she earned her Master’s Degree from The Boston Conservatory as a full scholarship student.

Chen Lin has won awards at many competitions. She won the First Prize in Taipei Music Competition in 2003 and the Fourth Prize in Taiwan Music Competition in 2004. She also won the Second Prize three times at Taipei Municipal University of Education Concerto Competition. A winner of the American String Teachers Association State-level Competition, (for Massachusetts), recently Ms. Lin won the Viola Prize at Boston University’s Bach Competition and performed Bach’s Suite No.2 at the winners’ concert. Ms. Lin has performed in the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, among others, and has been principal violist of the Boston Conservatory Orchestra and of the Boston University Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Lin is also an active chamber music player, and as a member of the Boston String Quartet she has performed in the Los Angeles Music Awards and in New York’s Carnegie Hall.

Ms. Lin’s previous teachers include Lee-Weng Wang, Teizo Yoshinaga and Roger Tapping. During her study, she has attended viola masterclasses by Igor Boguslavski, Marcus Thopmson, Daniel Avshalomov and Craig Mumm, and chamber music masterclasses by Peter Zazofsky, Steven Ansell, Peter Frankl, Martha Gerschefski, Leslie Perna and Norman Fischer. She is now pursuing her DMA degree with full scholarship at Boston University, where she is a student of Professor Michelle LaCourse. She also serves as a teaching assistant, giving viola lessons for non-music major students at Boston University.

Cellist, Loewi Lin

Loewi Lin, originally from Taiwan, moved to Alberta, Canada in 1990 at the age of seven. He started studying the cello at age 11 and in 2001, he performed the Dvorak Cello Concerto in B minor with the Calgary Youth Orchestra after winning First prize in the Frank Simpson Concerto Competition. The following year, he was accepted into the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with Richard Aaron for three years. During this period he was accepted into the Taos School of Music, where he was one of 20 musicians chosen to study chamber music intensively during the summer year in Taos, New Mexico with the Chicago and Brentano Quartets and Robert MacDonald.

After returning to Canada to study with Paul Marleyn at the University of Ottawa, he won the Concerto Competition not only in 2005 but also in 2006, earning him the opportunity to play the Elgar Cello Concerto in E minor and Shostakovich Cello Concerto in E-flat major with the University of Ottawa Orchestra. He was also selected to attend the New York String Seminar of 2004 and 2005, where he played in Carnegie Hall under the direction of Jaime Laredo and received chamber music coachings from members of the Emerson Quartet, Isidore Cohen, Michael Tree and Sharon Robinson. In the summer of 2005, Loewi attended the Beethoven Institute at Mannes College where he worked with Jacob Lateiner, Colin Carr, and Timothy Eddy. That same summer he also attended the Audubon String Quartet Seminar.

In 2005, Loewi was invited to perform both of the Sextets of Johannes Brahms at the Agassiz Music Festival with Jonathan Crow and Paul Marleyn. Most recently, he received 3rd prize in the 2006 Eckhardt-Gramatté National String Competition.
